Starting a Business? Advice to Consider

We work with businesses in a variety of stages and across a wide array of industries. Many startups contact our office in need of some direction amidst the murky waters, buried in paperwork but eager to get their dreams off the ground! Here are some basic tips to begin laying the foundation for your startup:

  1. Register a unique business name (LLC, Corporation, etc) with the secretary of state

  2. Obtain a unique employer identification number (EIN) / tax ID directly from the IRS online ***Be sure to save the form as it cannot be accessed a second time***

  3. Purchase a web domain and establish email service using said domain. These should match your business name, or similar abbreviation

  4. Build a website linking established web domain and email service

  5. Complete Google My Business and other similar online listings and directories (Bing, Yelp, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc)

  6. If you’re starting an online sales or retail business, you may need or want to learn the various sales platforms available (Amazon, eBay, Etsy, etc)

  7. You may need to select a third party payment processor. Choose wisely as the fees add up and some have strict terms or require contracts.

  8. Ensure you have all applicable local licenses and certifications, as necessary for your line of work

  9. Launch your business. Cheers to infinity and beyond!
