Renting A Car - Is That Covered By My Policy?

You’re taking a trip to the Florida keys on vacation. Your flight lands in Miami and then you plan to rent a vehicle and drive down to the keys for some sunshine and relaxation. But wait, is your rental car covered by your auto insurance policy?!?

Most times, renting a vehicle for pleasure (or other) use is NOT covered by a standard auto insurance policy. Some carriers will offer endorsements, sometimes called “drive other car” coverage, but many do not. Best bet is to buy the optional/additional coverage directly from whichever car rental company you’re using.

Generally, the only time rental cars are covered is when there has been a loss (claim) that is covered under a standard auto insurance policy that has rendered your usual vehicle inoperable or unsafe. Then the insurance carriers will either a) pay for your rental car directly or b) reimburse you for the rental at the close of the claim.

Remember - the devil’s in the details so read your auto policy jacket carefully!
